Introduction Letter “Penny”


Hi Everyone! My name is Penny. I am the mommy of two boys: Nick, who is 18 years old & Kristian, who is 13 years old. I came back to school two years ago after being out of high school for twenty years! I grew up (and went to school) in Orange County and graduated from Western High School in 1984. I am currently a junior at CSUSM and I am in the ICP program pursuing my Master’s to teach Special Education.
As far as my experience in technology is concerned, I use all of the basics such as the T.V., VCR, & DVD player, etc., as well as my cell phone which also doubles for a PDA (and I love!). I use a PC at home and have really had to learn to finagle my way around it since returning to school. My boys are way more computer savvy than I am, but I’m getting there!
The part of the mission statement that really speaks to me is the section that states: “collaboratively transform public education.” Although I believe that all of the mission statement holds some importance, this part speaks to me because I feel that the public school system is in trouble and in dyer need of transformation. I had not read the mission statement prior to attending CSUSM, so this was not a factor in my decision to enroll. However, I find it impressive that the transformation of the public school system is mentioned and held to such importance.
